How Often Should You Meditate Per Day?
Date: May 7th, 2025
If you’re new to the practice of meditation—or even if you've been at it for a while—you may wonder: how often should I meditate each day to get the best results?
The short answer is: it depends on your goals, lifestyle, and experience level. Let’s break it down.
For Beginners: Start Small, Stay Consistent
If you’re just starting out, consistency is more important than duration. Meditating once a day for even 5–10 minutes can be enough to begin experiencing benefits like reduced stress and improved focus. The key is making it a daily habit. A short, manageable session helps build the foundation of a long-term practice.
Suggested frequency: Once per day, 5–10 minutes
Actionable things you could do:
- Designate a Meditation Space: Choose a quiet, comfortable spot in your home to establish a consistent meditation habit.
- Set a Daily Reminder: Use a phone alarm or calendar notification to prompt your daily practice.
- Begin with Guided Sessions: Utilize beginner-friendly guided meditations to ease into the practice. I would recommend starting with a session by Mooji.
For Stress Relief and Mental Clarity: Once or Twice a Day
If you’re meditating to manage stress, improve focus, or clear your mind, many people find that one session in the morning helps set the tone for the day, while a second in the evening can help unwind. This doesn’t have to be long—a couple of short sessions can be very effective.
Suggested frequency: Once or twice per day, 10–20 minutes each
For Deeper Practice: Multiple Sessions or Longer Duration
More experienced meditators—or those seeking deep transformation, insight, or spiritual growth—often meditate two or more times per day, sometimes for longer periods (30 minutes or more). This level of practice can yield deeper calm, greater self-awareness, and a more profound shift in mindset.
Suggested frequency: 2–3 times per day, 20–30+ minutes each
Listen to Your Mind and Body
Ultimately, meditation isn’t about checking a box—it’s about cultivating awareness. Some days you might need more time, other days less. The best frequency is one that fits your life and feels sustainable.
There’s no universal rule for how often you should meditate per day. For most people, starting with one session per day is a great place to begin. As your practice deepens, you can increase frequency or duration based on your goals and lifestyle. Whether it's five minutes or fifty, what matters most is that you show up—with presence and intention.
Only ten minutes. Just enough time to return to yourself.
